“The revolution and women's rights are intertwined, and they can't be separated”. Such are the words of one of the founders of “Syrian Lady”, a magazine that sheds light on the struggle of women for justice and equality in the country.
The project was born in October 2013. Its chief editor is Mohammad Jalal, who works for several other magazines and media outlets. It is completely independent, and has not been funded by any organization so far.
The magazine deals with a diverse array of issues and topics, including coverage of general civic work conducted on the ground, as well as women's rights, psychological assistance, reports on female detainees, and articles and opinion pieces on literature and culture. In addition to that, the work of one Syrian female artist is highlighted on the back cover of each issue, with the exception of the first one, which was dedicated to the late Louay Kayali.
So far, “Syrian Lady” has been published in Daraa, as well as in a number of liberated towns. Some of the issues are printed in the Turkish town of Gaziantep, from where they are distributed to the outskirts of Hama, Idlib, Qamishli and Rihaniya, among other areas. The founders aim to reach as many places as possible throughout the country.
The project aims to pave the way for an increased participation of women in the future of Syria, within the frame of equal rights and social justice. “Women were an integral part of the uprising from its early stages, and the revolution should stay true to women's demands. Women are working, day by day, both for the Syrian struggle for freedom and for their own rights, by fighting oppression, extremism, and sexism."
