Syrian Media Center

11 May 2013

As revolutions in the Middle East and North Africa were ignited, local, pro-regime media sources began publishing misleading news and information. As a result, the importance of new media came to light. Social media tools helped transfer the voice of the people to the world. In this context, various social media centers were created. One example is the Syrian Media Center (SMC).

The SMC was founded at the advent of the Syrian revolution in March 2011. The idea for the center was developed at a meeting of a group of representatives of different media centers in Paris early that spring. They hoped to be the voice of Syrians to the world under a very repressive regime.

The professional nature of the SMC’s team, as well as its coverage of events in Syria, sets it apart from other media centers.

The SMC is made up of two groups; a core team of 20 people who worked on making the SMC possible, and a group of people contributing from inside and outside of Syria.

In addition, the SMC has about 60 reporters and tens of volunteers working from across Syria to report news and events. The SMC has a number of branches, both inside and outside the country, and it is quite easy to become a member.

The SMC has stated that it refuses to take a political or ideological stance. Yet, the center is a strong defender of the freedom of speech.

You can follow the SMC online on its website, Facebook page, twitter account and Youtube channel. The center also provides a Skype account where Syrian reporters on the ground can be reached.
