Syria Inside: Black humor and a tribute to a freedom fighter

27 June 2013

Black humor is the main ingredient of Syria Inside, a movie by Berlin-based Syrian Tamer al-Awam and German Jan Heilig that will launch in September 2013.

The idea was born in 2011, shortly after the uprising started, to show the general public the human side of the Syrian revolution under the light of the very unique black Syrian humor. In the words of its producers, the film aims to share “the good and bad that humans are capable of in the most extreme situations.”

The film is now also a tribute to Tamer al-Awam, who was shot by regime forces in Aleppo in September 2012, while he was filming. The death of the 34-year-old film-maker, who was also a well-known Syrian poet and writer, shocked Syrians in the country and abroad, and inspired others to continue his work.

Heilig is now working with web-show producers With You Syria to finish the black comedy movie by September. Through this work they send a powerful message to the Syrian regime, and to the rest of the world: “You can kill a person, but you can´t kill an idea.”
