Waw al-Wasl

25 September 2013

Waw al-Wasl is a group of young Syrian activists of journalistic, artistic and technical backgrounds. The group’s name refers to the "and" conjunction in Arabic, which serves as a metaphor for the will to reunite Syrians.
Waw al-Wasl work at a grassroots level, and they share their activists and projects through their Facebook page. Their short-term goal is to produce a wide range of movies and develop audio-visual media materials on different issues related to the Syrian struggle, so that viewers can take a look at the whole picture, including the diversity of the Syrian people, the opinions and aspirations of the youth and the obstacles hindering the transformation into a democratic system.

Syria Untold talked to one of the project’s founders, who spoke about the criteria to select the topics. “The group focuses mainly on following the daily lives of Syrians and the current political and economic transformation. We seek to establish a free environment and to fight against extremism. We choose our topics through communicating with the community and through the messages sent to us via our camera team.

The group rejects "neutrality" as a tag, because they "stand firmly against any violation and any form of terror exercised in Syria."

Although the lack of funding represents the main concern and obstacle faced by Waw al-Wasl, the group refuses any sort of financial aid. In the words of one of the activists: “We want to establish an independent organizational structure, capable of engaging in various fields of work".

Among their activities, the group highlights their video production and the code of decent behaviour they worked on and handed out to the Free Syrian Army. They aim to contribute to the culture that will guarantee the stability and renaissance of their society.
