Syria Binds Us

14 December 2013

A group of young civil activists in and outside Syria gathered shortly after the outbreak of the uprising to form the group Syria Binds Us. The group's main objectives were to support the uprising and to stand by the Syrian people on their weary path to freedom.

The group's main activities are civil, educational and related to humanitarian aid. They firmly believe in the importance of rebuilding the Syrian society, and so their activities focus particularily on children as a substantial element in the community. In their most remarkable campaign “Smile of a child” for instance, they handed out toys to children, to bring joy and happiness into their hearts. This campaign, like many others, was carried out within Syrian borders, despite the fact that nearly all members of the group have fled Syria.

The group has also launched several campaigns outside Syria to expose the Syrian regime and its hideous massacres. They launched a campaign in Istanbul, Turkey, called "A massacre without blood", where they handed out out multilingual brochures and displayed a video of al-Ghouta Massacre. The campaign spread to many other world capitals. One of the activists working with Syria Binds Us spoke to our website about the message behind their work: “There are two messages we want to deliver. The first is to our loved ones in Syria: just because we fled the country doesn't mean that our hands are tied. We will continue to fight against the regime regardless of our location. The second is to the international community and public opinion: we want to remind them of resonant slogans of freedom, human rights, and democracy...”

The team members of Syria Binds Us are all volunteers and most of them have day jobs to support their families. According to one of the activists they have no plans for the future at this moment, but after the fall of the regime, they might discuss the possibility of registering their group as a civil organization in Syria. The group of Syria Binds Us dreams of a united homeland, one that gathers its people under its wings in a democratic and pluralistic system that guarantees the rights of all its citizens without any discrimination.
