Marginalized by the regime, and left without electricity and other means of communication, the city of Hasaka is yet another example of the crude isolation imposed on liberated areas. Within this context, local media projects like “Free Excerpts” have emerged to break through the regime’s virtual siege, as one of its co-founders said to SyriaUntold.
The magazine was founded on April 2013, by a group of Syrian activists, based inside and outside the country. After one year of hard work, the magazine is publishing its 63rd issue, with a multinational staff of Lebanese, Egyptian and Moroccan activists.
The magazine focuses on the political and cultural aspects of the Syrian uprising, while still managing to cover the salient events taking place in the country. The section “Syria in a Week”, highlights the latest news from each Syrian governorate, via a network of correspondents.
Additionally, the magazine has expanded the scope of its coverage, to include international news and other regional issues, that have an impact on the course of events in Syria.
Free Excerpt is published and distributed in the entire governorate of Hasaka. It had also been distributed in the city of Raqqa for six months, until the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), banned any media outlet from operating within the city.
The team of Free Excerpt aims to spread a message of love and co-existence, and to undermine thoughts of revenge, hate and sectarianism.
