Ghaidaa

12 February 2015

Born in the city of Deir ez-Zor, artist “Ghaidaa” combines digital art with elements of surrealism to document the events of the Syrian uprising.

The artists graduated from the Institute of Business Administration in Damascus, and have attended numerous graphic design courses during her study.

It's difficult to come across Ghaidaa's paintings, since she works almost anonymously and promotes her work only via Facebook pages that take interest in Syrian art.

Although the artist's designs have a touch of surrealism, they exhibit faces of actual people. In “Eye on Events” and “Waiting”, Ghaidaa used real pictures of Syrian children, as their expressions painfully yet explicitly portray the situation in Syria.

However, almost none of her paintings are complete without a fragment of hope. “Symphony”, one of the artist's remarkable paintings, feature the renowned Clock Tower Square in Homs, where the first peaceful sit-in in the history of the uprising took place. And while the Clock that symbolizes Homs is surrounded by rubble, the road to its door is a set of piano keys, to which Ghaidaa comments: “Maybe the road to Homs, capital of the revolution, is music.”
