"Enough is Enough": Syrians attempt to regain control of their revolution

24 June 2013

After 14-year-old Mohammad Qatta Salmo was killed at the hands of an armed group in Aleppo, activists from different committees in the city got together to discuss the current state of the revolution, its mistakes and the way forward. To tackle these problems and keep hold of their revolutionary process, a campaign was put together under the name “Enough is enough.” It was born in Aleppo with the intention of spreading it to other parts of the country.

More than two years into the uprising, deplorable acts in the name of religion, such as Salmo´s killing after being accused of blasphemy, threaten the same values of freedom, justice, dignity, unity and diversity that Syrians have struggled to achieve. People standing for those values no longer fight against the regime alone, but against armed groups and mercenaries trying to steal away their revolution to impose their own agendas.

The reaction to Salmo´s killing was huge in Aleppo, with people demonstrating against extremist groups, setting tires on fire and shutting down the city in protest. “Our religion is a religion of justice, tolerance and compassion, not of killing and treason” and “Our Prophet Mohammad would condemn this killing” were the slogans repeated in reaction to the crime.

“We have reached a point where we can´t take it any more”, one of the activists under the nickname Guevara said to Syria Untold. “We don´t even know which group exactly is responsible for Salmo´s death, so we are demonstrating against the whole Al-Nusra Front, to demand they face the different groups and guarantee protection of civilians.”

On June 14, demonstrators reached the Fajr al-Islam mosque and raised the Syrian revolutionary flag next to the black Islamic one raised by the Al-Nusra front. “Syria is colorful, and we want it to stay this way”, was the message sent through this symbolic act.

According to Guevara, the “Enough is Enough” campaign follows the line of other civil disobedience initiatives in the region, such as the Egyptian “Kifaya” movement, and global symbols of peaceful resistance such as Ghandi. “Be the change you want to see” and “We will win our battle not if we kill our adversaries, but if they kill in us the desire to murder” are some of the slogans that Syrians civil activists take inspiration from.
