Since the beginning of the uprising, Syrians have created numerous ways to illuminate the darkness and clear the fog that surrounds the Syrian conflict. Within this context, the Free Syrian Translators group was founded, to help deliver the real image of the Syrian situation to the world.

The group started off by translating articles, documentaries, and studies issued by foreign newspapers and international research centers, to break the regime's monopoly on knowledge. However, as the team grew in number, they were able to cover a range of languages including English, French, Russian and German.

The activists focus on translating foreign studies and researches related to nonviolent movements, and making them feasible to the Syrian citizen, after noticing the wide gap between global intellectual production, and the Arab press materials.

By translating articles and subtitling videos and films, the group's aims to contextualize these contents, to "transfer the insights and views of the world’s countries and nations about the Syrian uprising, and convey the realistic sounds and images of what is going on in our beloved country to the world’s public opinion," as the founders describe it.

The chosen materials are selected and verified through a controlled mechanism, that ensures achieving professional standards and contributes to the continuous expansion and diversity of the coverage areas. 

Up to now, the group, which has been working since September 2011, has not received any funding, and the team of 33 translators, covers all its expenses through financial contributions from its own members.
