Digital Security Awareness

12 March 2014

In the wake of increasing cyber-attacks targeting Syrian activists, digital security has become indispensable to the online community in Syria. Within this framework, digital security experts joined efforts to launch a security awareness campaign, in July 7, 2014.

The Facebook campaign was an eight-week event designed to inform people of the cyber risks they face and the best way to reduce them. Organizers posted posters, tips and surveys, in an attempt to create an interactive space between users and digital security experts.

By focusing on a different topic each week, the campaign’s operators were able to cover a wide range of issues including internet privacy, digital fingerprinting, malicious attacks, how to protect accounts and sensitive information, among others.

What helped put the campaign into action is the collaboration between numerous groups that have expertise in the field of digital security. “Salama Tech, Cyber Arabs, Revolution Office for Security Consulting and Tech4Freedom were all part of the awareness campaign. Dividing the workload between five different groups has helped the campaign become a success.” As one of the organizers says to SyriaUntold.

The campaign’s operators aim not only to protect Syrian activists, but also to highlight the importance of protecting, exchanging and retrieving information, as they are documentation of a significant phase in the history of Syria.
