No to Their Arrest

22 November 2013

No to Their Arrest, is a campaign launched by a gorup of Syrian activists as a reminder of detainees in Syrian prisons. The campaign aims to tell the detainees stories, so that they are more than mere numbers for the populace at large. In solidarity with Syrian detainees and what they suffer behind bars, the activists design posters involving detainees' backgrounds, their arresting conditions, a picture and poems dedicated to them. Additionally, they share messages addressed to them by their families and loved ones. The campaign also encourages creative people to participate by sending their designs and poems to add to the posters.

No to Their Arrest also coordinate its efforts with groups deemed reliable, which in turn communicate with specialized international bodies. “Our main specialty is a creative one, and thus, we have been cooperating with several groups to supplement us in other areas,” according to one of its activists in an interview with Syrian Untold.

No to Their Arrest joins a long list of events and campaigns launched by Syrian activists to support detainees and to bring them to the fore, so that Syrians never forget those who sacrificed their own freedom for their country. Nevertheless, despite the number of campaigns concerned with the issue, No to Their Arrest distinguishes itself by compiling an archive for each individual detainee and by its artistic and creative focus. To the campaigners, each and every poster is not only meant as a documentation of a prisoner, but also as a poem in picture. These posters are there to remind us that these people have families, friends and lovers waiting for them to come home.
