In October 2013, Anna Lindh Foundation presented its Mediterranean Journalist of the Year Award to Basma Atassi, for her al-Jazeera report Drawing Hope in Syria, in the city of Aleppo.

Earlier that year in May, Atassi had won the 2013 Online Media Award in London, for an interaction that tracked and analyzed defections from the Syrian regime.
